Problem with using internet via DSL(PPPoE) Dialup in Linux

First of all Wish U all Members of LQ a Happy and Prosperous New Year!!!!!!!

Dear Friends My question is I have created my DSL Dialup(PPPoE) connection in RedHat 9 Linux the connection was created successfully and even when i issue the command in linux command prompt(Terminal):
# ifconfig

It was showing me ppp0 connection up and also showing me the Internet Dynamic IP Add and DNS IP Add.

but when i go to mozilla browser for surfing net i was not able to get web page even i have check my internet connection via "lynx" command in linux shell. I have also ping the yahoo.com, gmail.com etc but it was not pinging that sites. Can u tell me where i'm commiting the mistake and also the command for creating ppp0 connection via CLI(Shell) mode.

Plz note I'm using my residencial connection not coporate connection so there is no extra securities and blockage of services!!!!!!

how did you setup the PPPoE dsl connection?

are the lights all on on your modem i.e. the dsl light not flashing?

what is the output of ifconfig, does it match what your isp gave you?

The great firewall?
 

You said that ifconfig showed the ppp0 connection setup with the correct DNS yet you can't ping gmail.com, correct?

I've only ever used PPPoE in the People's Republic of China (in the UK my broadband modem just appears as a normal TCP/IP router on my cat5 LAN), so I have to ask the question, is your internet connection censored by your government? gmail.com is reported to be a site that the Chinese censor.

Also, some sites block ICMP traffic so ping won't work anyway.

Does a simple nslookup work?

The output from ifconfig -a would be helpful too.

I have also ping the yahoo.com, gmail.com etc but it was not pinging that sites.

have you entered in your dns statically?

I'm interested in your comments about using PPPoe in China. I've been here for more than 13 years and of course am aware of the "monitoring" that goes on over the internet, by yes the Chinese Gov. Yet, I find your comments confusing. Do they check your receiving and sending? Yes. Does this cause problems and keep your broadband from working? No. Sometimes on rare occasions emails have been delayed for an unusually long period of time. It has happened on a couple of occasions that I was blocked for a short period of time from a particular website, until they figured out that what I was uploading to the website was not subversive materials but merely friendly digital pictures to my classmates in the US. Then things returned to normal.

We know what the situation is here and don't stir up trouble over it, because we foreigners are after all only visitors in this country and in fact are treated quite well. Better than we are often treated in our home countries.

My PPPoe works pretty well both in winxp and Ubunutu, and if this poster's config and hardware are in good order his adsl should work too, without having to think of the "different" situation in this country. We should try not to confuse him with these other issues.

It is possible that I may be confusing cj_cheema with irrelevant information.

However, from my own personal experience pings to my own website have been blocked when I had "subversive" information on it (i.e. I did a wget of Families Need Father's website, which presumably had too many references to freedom and democracy). Yes after I deleted the data my pings were unblocked again 10 minutes later.

Also, cj_cheema said he was trying to ping gmail.com and I read that this was censored at http://www.chinese-forums.com/showth...ail+censorship although I have never had a problem using smtp.gmail.com for outgoing mail.

Never known the Chinese gov to react so promptly, esp to such a single rather innocuous incident as you describe. You might consider whether it was a bit of paranoia on your part. The Chinese guys on the net who do this work have often been demonized like this. You surely won't be surprised if I mention the US gov does the same thing.

Thanx member 4 quick reply and also giving special interest in my questions. But guys like i have told u before that i'm using my resenditial DSL connection not commercial connection thats why i have not issue on security. And also here in India there is no restriction on GMAIL or other Sites. My Problem is i'm not able to access internet when i make connection with the dialup of DSL Modem or Router however it always shows my isp assign Dynamic IP Add. and DNS whenever i connect my Dialup via PPPoE connections. I check this from ifconfig or ifconfig ppp0 command from linux shell. But when i use another connections like "ALWAYS ON" or cable internet in which i need not use dialer for connecting with my ISP. I'm able to access internet on my REDHAT Linux machine and also i'm able ping any site from my pc but it is very expensive for me so i want to use DSL Connection which is very cheap in INDIA. So Plz help me how can i rectify my problem, how can i access internet from DSL PPPoE connection in my RedHat9 Linux Machine. Thanx in advance.

Thanks for clarifying these points. The important thing is that you are able to ping these sites using a different connection.

If the ppp0 interface is automatically assigning IP and DNS via DHCP from your ISP, then it should be ok, but I wonder if your default route is being assigned by DHCP.

I haven't seen an example ifconfig output for a PPP connection recently, but from what I remember it should give both your local IP and the ISP's router IP. What does your routing table look like?

netstat -rn

Do you have a route to "default" or 0.0.0.0? and is it your ISP's router IP? If not can you try adding it with the route command. Not sure if the syntax is the same for Redhat, but the syntax for route on SUSE is

route add -net default gw nn.nn.nn.nn

where nn.nn.nn.nn is the IP address for your default router.

Also, to confirm the DNS has been obtained correctly from your ISP, what does nslookup or dig give for yahoo.com?
