I had hoped one of the more knowledgeable folks would have jumped in here to help you out
Do you know how to go into the menu system in the upper left and open up Terminal?
If so you could try at the command line:
Code:
$ ifconfig
$ iwlist wlan0 scan

Go to a empty space on the task bar
click on right button of the mouse choose add to panel
and select the Network monitor
With this option you can add wire or wireless connection
