Problem with router printer port

OK, I bought a Speedstream 2604 4-port DSL Router and it has a printer port attached to it so every PC on the network can use the printer. Problem is, it uses a Windows driver for it and I can't find a Linux solution. If anyone is familiar with this router, can they help me set up my printer to work with it?

No one knows? I need to find out what to do with it since right now I can't print from my main linux machine. Is there a way to simulate the windows driver with linux? Or a third person linux driver for the router?

Well, if no one knows how to get the router printer port to work, I am forced to find other solutions. Is it possible to connect the printer to the linux box and share it with the windows machine? Thanks in advance.

I alway thought that those print servers just served up an ip address for the printer. Doesn't each machine on the net, whether it is a Linux or Windows, have to have the driver installed individually for the printer?

Anyway, look into Samba... I am still trying to get it to work with my XP laptop, but it acts like a windows SMB (Server Message Block) server. It allows you to share files and printers with MS stuff

The way this router works is that you install a special router driver first, and it fools the PC into thinking that the printer is local. Problem is, there's no linux driver for it. Anyway, thanks for the samba tip, I'll have to check it out.

I have the same router and wish I knew how to do this. If you ever get it figured out be sure to post. I can't imagine we're the only ones with this problem.

I just got samba to work tonight... You can share a Linux printer with a Windows machine, share a windows printer with with a Linux machine, share a Linux drive with a windows client, and vice versa. I have tried various 'how tos', but the best one so far is at: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO. It starts with a basic config and walks you through each and every step, unlike most of the others that start you with the default config which is much more in depth. FYI, my laptop has XP Home Ed.

One thing else... If you have an extra system, you may want to make that your print server/file server for both Windows and Linux. There is a Samba client program that lets you access MS shares (what your router is), I am not sure if it'll work.

Finally got it working, here's how

I finally got the printer setup and working with this router. It turned out to be easier than expected. Here is what I did:

Start the print manager (I'm running KDE, so adjust as necessary for your window manager).
Print system used is CUPS
Choose Add Printer/Class..., this starts the Add Printer Wizard
Backend Selection is Remote LPD Queue
Host is the IP address of the router, probably 192.168.254.254
Queue is L1
Hit next, this seemed to take a minute or so for me so don't panic when it stops responding.
Now you should be at the printer model selection screen
I didn't have any printer models to choose from here, yours may differ
I chose raw printer(no driver needed) for my HP 4000TN laserjet printer
I was able to successfully print a test page fromt the next page
The rest should be just setting various options like quotas and permissions, I'll leave that to the user to determine. I didn't have to change anything for me though.
Give your printer a name and perhaps a location
Close the print manager and open a test document. It worked for me.

I didn't have to change any settings on my router. Hopefully this works for other people with this router. For those who are curious it was mostly by looking at the following .pdf document that allowed me to get it to work
http://media-server.amazon.com/media...L000008836.pdf
Using the linux setup page on chapter 4.
