problem with pcmcia card. can set ip, can't ping

Hi!

I have a Zonet pcmcia networkcard. That's the only network card in this machine
(IBM thinkpad P2 laptop) so the interface is eth0

I can set an ip to it and I can ping that ip but I can't ping the other people in the LAN (which by the way use GNU/Linux as well)

I use linux-2.6.11.7 and the 8139too module.
(I also tried putting it in the kernel but it gives the same results)

lscpi tells me that the card is
01:00:0 Ethernet controller: RealTek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

If I try to ping my friend:
#ping 192.168.88.243
PING 192.168.88.243 (192.168.88.243) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 192.168.88.247 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable

The card works btw in Windows.

Any ideas? Else my sister has to run Windows...

Thanks!

Do you have your gateway address for your router set right?

Yes, the gateway is set up right. but probably wouldn't matter since I even can't ping the computers in the same network. (I don't really care about internet, that's a problem for later)

I forgot to mention. The router was/had a dhcp server but it didn't work out for me at
all. That's way I have to it all manually.

Which distro are you using?
Are the other computers set to respond to pings?
What does it show when you type ifconfig.
