problem with nslookup


when i ran the command nslookup <mymachine> i got the reply as

server: 127.0.0.1
address: 127.0.0.1#53
server can't find <mymachine>:NXDOMAIN

how can i fix this problem and what does #53 mean?

That just indicates that it is trying to access a name server on port 53 on your local machine. If you are running a local name server then it looks like its broken or not running; if you aren't running a local name server then you want to edit /etc/resolve.conf and add the IP addresses of your real name servers... If you are on a LAN get these from one of your IT guys, or if you are on a dialup give your ISPs tech support a shout.
