Problem with Network Card

Hi all

I am running suse 8.1 and have a big problem with my network card.
Everything run flawlessly. Itīs a 3com card, got autodetected by yast and run for about 2 month without a problem.
Yesterday the connection suddenly broke and i was not able to connect to the internet again. So run yast, which is autodetecting the card and un- and reinstalled the card. But no connection.
i did a ifconfig, ifdown, ifup, ifstatus... and it told me that dhcpcd is up but eth0 is not active
so the problem: no internet connection

btw i already reinstalled my eth card a few times before, without having such a strange problem and the card is ok because i write this from the same box (win).

here some more info:

i tried to load the kernel module with linuxrc and it said that the module got loaded succsessfully. but still no eth0 active after a ifstatus eth0 . I also looked into the etc/modules.conf. i did not found a entry for my eth card so i included a alias eth0 3c90x but still no luck.

so i did a ifconfig eth0
Quote:
eth0

inet6 addr: fe80::250:4ff:feef:54ca/10 Scope:Link

collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:4740 (4.6 Kb) TX bytes:3828 (3.7 Kb)

i also did a look at the boot msg

and after this i took a look at var/log msg
and found this output after i reinstalled the eth card:

If you definately haven't changed anything in the software then I would try the network card in a different machine and/or change the NIC in your machine for another and see what happens.

Nice first post BTW plenty of info.

cheers

Sorry, I'm probably missed something but where does a modem come into it?

cheers

ok, i made it finally.
i did a new installation of my linux distribution, but nothing changed. After i read in the support database that i should switch off auto plug and play in my bios i checked it out. But it was switched off so i switched it on and now everything is alright.
can anyone explain this to me?
thanks for the help

The only explination I can think of is that something changed very slightly with your hardware that was causing a conflict that wasn't being picked up by the plug-n-play code. Enabling PnP in your BIOS will have re-jigged your hardware settings which I imagine has remove the problem. Its very odd that this occured if you haven't changed anything though. Many BIOSs do a bad job of PnP initialisation hence you are often told to leave it to the kernel.

cheers

Jamie...
