Problem with LAN connecting to internet.

Hi all.

I've got my network running after reconfiguring the firewalls and finally getting the machines to reliably ping each other. My problem is I can't get on the internet from the machine that doesn't have the modem connection. To put it simply:-

Main has 56k dial up to my ISP. Lappie is connected to Main via LAN (ethernet) Lappie won't get onto the internet no matter what I try. I have several combinations in which to get this to work so far none have worked.

OK, here goes.
Main is dual boot Mandrake 9.2 and win xp. Has modem installed. Connects to the internet by itself with no probs on both OS.

Lappie is dual boot Mandrake 9.2 and win 2000. Won't connect to the internet on the LAN no matter which combination of the OS I use.

Main has IP fixed at 192.168.0.1
Lappie has fixed IP at 192.168.0.2
Both have netmask 255.255.255.0

I've tried connecting using proxy on Mozilla on the lappie with no result.

Any help?

It sounds like you don't have internet connection sharing turned on on the main machine when you are in windows 2000 and that you don't have the correct routing turned on when you main machine is it linux.

In 2000 if you right click on your dial up connection and go to the advanced tab I think it is there should be a checkbox to turn on internet connection sharing, when you do that it will change the ip address of your lan card, just go in and change it back.

I would have to look up what the commands are to setup internet connection sharing in linux but basicly you would have to have routing turned on and put the correct rules in iptables. I will try to look that up and post back.

One more thing, you need to setup your dns numbers in the laptop in both 2000 and linux, in 2000 just right click on your network card and go to properites and then into tcp/ip and add in your dns numbers, in linux add them to the /etc/resolv.conf file.

Ok here is a couple of docs, the first one is from the linux documentation project, it looks like overkill for what you are doing, but it is worth it.

http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquerade-HOWTO/

This one is using ipchains which is older and shouldn't really be used but it tells you a bit more than what I said above

http://www.linuxheadquarters.com/how...ipchains.shtml

And this one looks much simpler and is using iptables. I hope these documents will get you up and running.

Thanks for those. I'll give them a try later and I'll get back to you with how successful I've been.

THANK YOU
I've been trying for so long to get my linux box to route traffic between my router and my windows computer. Everything was configured except the line that flushes current iptables rules, and the one for enabling masquerading.

My next prob is that windows can only ping ip addresses, not domains (the linux box is fine tho) but i dont want to hijack this thread.

phew.. finally!
