Cool problem with ethernet after reinstall of Fc8

After a crash of my HD on a HP workstation (64bit) I had to reinstall the dual boot Windows 7 and Fc8 (before the crash XP was installed). Anyway, as I went through the networking configuration i could not see the networkcard Broadcom NetXtreme (BCMM5764M). I installed the2.6.23.1.42.fc8 version because everything was fine with this one eventually. Does anyone know how I can get the card displayed on system-config-network?
lspci gives:Ethernet controler: Broadcom Corporation Unknown device 1684
I modprobe tg3 but nothing happened and the ethernet connexion is still disable. I also disabled Network manager and dispatcher.
Thank you for ANY help,

Cheers,

I just did a rpm -qa and found out this:
kernel 2.6.23.1-42.fc8
mikmod-3.2.2-2.fc7

Is it usual to have some stuffs from fc7?

seeing as fedora 8 DIED a long time ago and has NOT been supported in YEARS
it went END OF LIFE in July 2008

do NOT use it

Install the current Fedora 15 you are 7 versions out of date.

and yes it is common for about 3 to 6 old rmps to be included in a new release.

fedora8 is SO OLD that it will not have support for new hardware

install fedora 15

Yes. Most Fedora versions use packages from a previous Fedora.
If there is no new version / no updates for the library / application :
No reason to build a new package.

Why are you installing an obsolete Fedora 8 ?
Fedora's have a short life. ( 13 months.) Fedora 8 : Till January 2009.

Suggest : Install the long term supported CentOS 6 / Scientific SL6.1,
both are free copies of RHEL 6 : Based on Fedora 12.

..

I wanted to stick to fc8 because I used a monte carlo software (quite complex) old version that worked with gcc 3.x.x and it took me years to run it fine(since fedora always wanted to upgrade gcc version). I think I will try to install this software on fc11 (i have the DVD install for this one). Hope it will be fine. Thank you for these advice.

1) You can have as many compilers as you want, installed at the same time.
Available compat compilers : a) # yum install compat-gcc-34-c++
b) Other "compat" gcc33-3.3.3 , etc. ( Works OK in all Fedora.)
http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/ftp.open...E-10_SDK/i586/

2) No "gcc" package gets updated, if you add an "exclude line" in /etc/yum.conf
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/redhat-...lude-packages/
Like : exclude=gcc* ( The wildcard ( * ) is a must.)
