Problem whith proxy server

I have a dual boot system whith windowsxp and slackware9 connected to the internet via a proxy server. My problem is that i cant make to work the internet conection on linux. I put the same names and adresses whith windows, but always the browsers failing to find the proxy server. It is possible to exist a problem between the proxy server and linux or this is my mistake ???
