Yes, that works. Interestingly I get, as part of the registration process, the message:
The authenticity of host 'bigboy' (192.168.xx.yy) cannot be established. Are you sure you want to continue?

Presumably this is where you would want to ask for a certificate for a remote host run by other people who might not be who they seem.

Then I tested with ssh, as suggested by the registration program, and got straight in. I browsed around a bit and I can go everywhere and list directories.

Thank you everyone. From now on I shall probably use scp for dumping.

PS: I just ran who and I'm there on pts/3 with littleboy's address appended.

The SSH client gives you the chance to verify the server's key when you first connect. Trust-on-first-use is more or less standard practice, though in very high target jobs one gets the fingerprint out of band in advance. Either way, once the host's key is accepted it is stored on your client in the known_hosts file.

I'll just drop a tip about [font=courier]rsync[/url] as well since it runs over SSH and can even use key-based authentication for automating transfers.

Thank you very much, Turbocapitalist, for putting me on to ssh/scp. This is a truly marvelous program. scp is easier to use than even command line ftp and much easier than gFTP. No need to move around the directory tree; you just give
Code:
 scp user@host:/absolute/path/to/target target_copy
and away you go! I think it's faster too.
