problem getting ntp to run properly

Hi there --

We have several workstations that are running a 'derivative' of the Fedora operating system. The problem that is occurring is their inability to run the ntp daemon.

The workstations have DNS enabled, and also have the correct subnet mask and gateway settings configured for their NIC's. There are no firewall applications running, and all workstations have selinux set to disabled.

When the ntpq -p command is entered at the root prompt, the following error message appears on-screen:

Quote:
Servname not supported for ai_socktype
When an nslookup is done on the known NTP server, the following is displayed on-screen:

Quote:
Server: DNS Server IP Address
Address: DNS Server IP Address#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: NTP Server FQDN
Address: NTP Server IP Address
I have checked other systems that rely on the NTP server for time synchronziation, and the error messages did not manifest themselves.
The settings that I am trying to configure on the systems in question are the same as those that are in place on the other systems.

What step(s) do I need to take in order to get NTP to run properly?

plenty of hits for that error message. have you tried the ususal suspects? for example - http://www.ducea.com/2006/09/11/erro...r-ai_socktype/

Hi there --

Thanks for your reply. The answer was the ntp lines being commented out in /etc/services. Once those were uncommented, the problem was solved.

Thanks again.
