Problem connecting to Bigpond ADSL with Linux

I have recently subscribed to Bigpond ADSL broadband in Western Australia, but cannot get it to work with Linux (I can connect OK with windows so know the modem, userid, PW, comms line etc is good).

I am using a Dynalink RTA100+ router / modem given to me by a friend. I have two computers, one running SuSE 10.0 the other Mandrake 10 Community. The result of trying to connect is the same in both laptops which makes me think its some compatibility with the modem?

After setting up (eg by using YAST to configure a new DSL) the three lights (PWR, LAN and DSL) come on but when trying to connect I just get a message TIMED OUT after 30 seconds. I don't notice the ACTivity light flashing much so I'm not sure that its getting as far as bigpond. I've also tried with rp-pppoe but that has a similar result. With kinternet I get Timed Out waiting for PAD0.

The router is connected (in both laptops) to the ethernet port which, as far as I can see, is configured correctly.(here is the output from dmesg
eth0: Link is up, running at 100Mbit half-duplex ).

Can anybody help with this (I can give more detail if required by connecting the router back up).

Thanks

It sounds like your PC is doing the authentication to bigpond, not the modem - is that correct? If so, and it's working when your PC is running Windows then the port forwarding on the router/modem is working properly (it should be the same ports under Linux).

Your firewall under linux may be blocking the connection. You could run ethereal to see whether the bigpond servers are being found as well as disabling the firewall in the Linux box to see if it works.

I'm not at my home PC at the moment so I can't check what happens on it (iinet via ADSL). I'll try and have a look tonight, but my modem is set up in bridged mode although it's still the PC doing the authentication (rp-pppoe).
