prevent flooding on firerwall

any suggesitons on how to prevent flooding on the firewall

some one referred me using APF for iptables and BFD(brute force detection)
this will help me in keping a chelkc on flooding on my firewall machine

i am presently using shorewall for iptables and though i am dropping all packets on that machine, there is flooding on the network , due to some virus on windows machines.
this cause the firewall on the proxy to disfunction

regards

I believe that soft is a soft. Any programmer while creating adds personal stuff and "improvements" so to speak. Again, I think using iptables on low level of run is the answer
