hi.. i'm new to linux and i'm sorry if this question had been asked before.. i just want to ask, is it possible to run "pppoe-start" as a user and not as root?? i was just wondering what if i add another user with no root privileges or does not know the root password.. how can he or even i can connect to the internet without logging as a root.. thank you in advance..
To allow non-root users, you can setup sudo so other users can run it. Or you can start the connection during boot (although that might not be what you want).
PS
On Ubuntu 6.06, the command is pon dsl-provider and that could be executed by any user (if I remember correctly, I'm now behind a router so don't need the command anymore).
maybe you can 'chmod +s ' to the program ,to make it sticky!
so that you can run the program as a common user.but you must
care that everyone can run it maybe a securiyt problem in the future .
hi.. thank you for your replies.. i was able to find a thread with the same question.. it was started by Janusz11 last 20050930.. check it out for another option..
