Dear Linux gurus,
I have two computers both with redhat 9. I want to try PPPoe. I want to make one pppoe server and other client. I have connected the computers back to back through cross cable.
I have already downloaded and installed rp-ppoe and read all the how-tos.
Whenever I google, I find documentation that says something about dsl modem. I don't understand, can we not do PPPoe without dsl modem?
You do not need an ADSL modem to do PPPoE between a PPPoE server and a PPPoE client.
Alhough I cannot telle you waht your problem is, I know for sure it is perfectly possible to connect a PC with PPPoE server and a PC with PPPoE client back to back with a crossed Ethernet cable and setup a PPPoE session between them.
edit your
/etc/pppoe.conf
/etc/ppp/pppoe-server.options (something like that)
/etc/pap/pap-secrets or /etc/ppp/chap-secrets for usernames and passwords
then run
pppoe-server
read man pppd for more information.
now configure ur client.
and use tcpdump on server to check the pppoe traffic.
