pppd problem
Posted this a while back in General, but got no (useful) response.
Quote:
All of a sudden, whenever I try to connect to an ISP using a U.S.Robotics serial modem on linux (using kppp), I get a stupid LCP timeout and get disconnected. The modem dials fine and connects to the server, but during the logon phase there seems to be no response from the server (the RD light on modem is never turned on) and then it terminates. The ironic thing is this problem has occured since only a few days ago, I had no problem connecting before that.
Note that I've tried quite a few ISP's (all of which worked fine beforehand), and the problem doesn't exist in Windows.

A fresh install didn't get rid of this problem either. Note that I'm absolutely unable to establish a connection on Linux and have been stuck with Windows for a couple of weeks, and this is driving me crazy. I've already googled a lot to no avail. So... I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could come up with a solution.

Try using the command line tool wvdial..
It is an intelligent dialler and will set up the parameters automagically while connecting. You an then set these in the kppp advanced modem options boxes.

Really, is this so unique that no one has even the slightest idea how it could be solved?

It sounds like what would happen if you were using a modem that's too slow for internet use and the ISP will refuse it. Have you checked the serial port settings with setserial? Maybe they got changed accidentally.

As stated in the original post, this problem only occurs on Linux, no problem on Windows. So I doubt it's hardware related (considering that even on Linux I had no problem up unti a while ago when this began to happen).

There's going to be a log of the comms between wvdial and the modem.
Prob in /var/log/debug or wherever debug info is sent.
Where's the point it fails?

Right after when the handshake noise dies off. A while later (from 2-3 to 20 seconds, depending on the ISP) it disconnects with a timeout message (wvdial terminates with various exit codes, which to this point have been 2, 10 and 16).
