PPPD defaults to very high MTU

Ive just got a PCI ADSL card working in my linux box using PPP over ATM and its all working except for some reason on connection it defaults to MTU 32725.
I have to manually set it to 1500 with ifconfig after connection.

Ive added "MTU 1500" into /etc/ppp/options but although its not flagging up an error seems to be totally ignoring it. Is there some other option i need to get it to set this value on connect?

In a similar vein it appears to be ignoring my netmask line in there too.
