pppd[0]: No response to PAP authenticate-requests

Hi guys I am new to this forum (hell I am new to all this Linux revolution), I have a feeling that I will have a lot of silly and stupid questions and will be a pain in the A$$....so bear with me.

I am a newbie in Linux and I just installed SuSE 10.0. Knowing that modems will be a problem for me, I made things easier for me and got me a external modem, I managed to get it recognized, got a dial tone, and dialed to my ISP. It was too good to be true, really music to the ears . But I got the following error message:

Quote:
SuSE Meta pppd (smpppd-ifcfg), Version 1.59 on linux.
Status is: disconnected
trying to connect to smpppd

pppd[0]: Modem hangup

pppd[0] died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code 16)
Now I understand that PAP is password authenication protocol, I tried to tweak around with kppp, but still it didnt work. I am guessing I have to tweak around with some of the files (ppp-on) and what not. Which I am really hesitant to do. Did anybody have this problem before?? and if so, how can I remedy it? Thanx in advance guys.

This appears to simply be an authentication problem. Verify that your ISP does in fact use PAP and not CHAP. Make absolutly sure that your password and login are correct. If you have an alternate number to dial into try that as well.

The password and username cannot be wrong....cuz this ISP does not require any...any mumbo jumbo could be a user name and a blank password would suffice...I would be charged for costs on my phone bill.

I dont think if I called their hotline they would know if they use PAP or CHAP, their representatives are clueless, I am pretty sure about that. In both cases I tried PAP, CHAP, and perhaps every option that kppp could offer.
