How can I setup PPP over Ethernet?

Hi Guys,

I have this network application (to which I don't have the source code) that only works when a ppp0 interface is up. It uses a specific IP off the ppp interface.

If the ppp0 interface goes down, the application's 'heartbeat' timer doesn't reset and the whole app closes. I want this app to work via an ethernet interface (eth0). So what I did was I kept the ppp0 interface up and I setup an eth0 interface and gave it the same IP as the ppp0. Then I tried accessing the network and it worked! I also made sure that the traffic was going through the eth0 and not the ppp0 by checking the number of TX/RX packets.

I need a permanent fix/workaround for this. I believe I have one of two options:

1) I should fool the app by keeping a dummy ppp0 interface always up (I don't know how to do that). For testing, I had to physically dial into a RAS server, but I don't wanna do that in the permanent fix.

2) I setup a real ppp0 connection over ethernet, that has the IP I want (I don't know how to do that either).

Can you guys please help out?

if u r giving ur public address to the eth0,then the network is changed,u may not be able to acess ur aother machines in the network

also defines a network for LANS, so u might have settings of a trusted and untrusted network in ur system which may differ now since u r jumping to a new network

i do not know what exactly u should do to solver ur problem, just giving my views here
