PPP: modem will query but not init

Trying to dial freezes on `initialising Modem` in kppp.

- I've had it working before... on a 2.6.0 kernel.

- I'm using kppp because I find pppd on the command line a bit of a black art, having to go through /etc/ppp/peers and the like

Modem is on: external /dev/ttyS0 (`com1`) - my only serial port.
Modules loaded: ppp_generic, ppp_async, 8250 (serial), serial_core + more
kernel: 2.6.1
distro: gentoo

TIA

Are you sure the problem is due to pppd (I suppose that kppp use pppd)?
I think that it's probably due to chat (or wvdial, I don't know which kppp uses) which can't set up the modem correctly. What about log messages???

I had this problem with my LT winmodem. It would querry but not connect.
Being a newbie, I didn't know there was suppose to be script in the querry. When I got my external modem to work there is script in the querry. Has to have something to do with drivers, IMHO.

Arrow "/dev/tts/0 doesn't exist"

hmm, using devfs (/etc/devfsd.conf) from gentoo:

Code:
ls -l /dev/modem
-> "/dev/modem -> /dev/tts/0"

Code:
# echo "1" > /dev/modem
-> "/dev/modem doesn't exist"

Code:
# echo "1" > /dev/tts/0
-> "/dev/tts/0 doesn't exist"
