ppp filters (out)... need 12 bytes more headroom

On Suse Linux Ent Server 9 SP1, I sometimes receive the following message when a user dials into the box for a ppp connection:

kernel: ppp filters (out) not running - need 12 byte more headroom

This is just after script /etc/ppp/ip_up runs, and it does not happen all the time. The system has 512MB RAM and is only using about 300MB, and no swap space is used.

Any suggestions on what to look for?

TIA,

Joel
