potential conflicts with VPN and NFS/NIS?

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question.

I have a computer that is mounting it's home drive through NFS and users through NIS. It is on a private network and connects to the outside through the NFS server.

Someone asked me to install a vpn client on the computer to connect to another network. Would this cause a problem with NFS and NIS on that machine? Or does VPN create some kind of alternative route for the machine to connect to the outside network?

Hopefully I explained that correctly. Thank you!

Hi cp51

The short answer is, probably not. The most common types of VPN clients (Anyconnect for example) just create a secure connection between your computer and a remote system for purposes of credential authentication and secure access. It has to be called as part of the login process, it wont begin encrypting data level transactions.
But then again... you didn't tell us what VPN client you were asked to use, so take the above with a grain of salt.

Probably a better question is are you accessing the internet via a proxy and is the proxy configured to do the thing you are about to try.
