Postfix user accounts

Hello,

I would like advice on how best i can go about totally seperating my mail users from my linux (/etc/passwd) users.

Preferably, I would like to use users from both the above stated sources.

What technologies need I investigate to accomplish this.

Thank you.

What you are looking for is "Virtual Users" as we call them. Here is a how-to on one way to implement them. This one uses a mysql database as a user/domain database. I use this method only I run a postgresql database instead of a mysql database.

ok well good to know that i'm on the right track.....

I'm in a bit of a rush right now, so I'll check the link later. But from what I've seen from these types of emails they refer to aliases alot so i was begining to think that I had to haev real unix users to alias my virtual users to. True/False?

And the Postfix+MySQL HOWTO i was startign to check offered no independant user mangaing abilites, etc.

Thank you

Nope, you just have to have a directory full of maildirs to point to for the users.

The system I have setup the users username, password (hash only, of course), maildir direcotry, ect. are in a database and postfix looks to the database to finds it's users and delivers mail to the maildir listed for them.
