Postfix problems

Hi,

I'm having a few problems setting up postfix on a mandrake 9.1 box. I've installed and configured postfix and it appears to be half working . Here's the situation.

I can send an email from user@otherdomain to user@mydomain and the email is received and stored in /var/spool/mail/user.

I can telnet the postfix daemon localy and send mail out. If i try $mailto the shell hangs and you have to escape out. I've tried
$mailto user
$mailto user@localhost
$mailto user@localdomain
$mailto user@externaldomain

Is that a postfix problem or something totally different? As i write this i'm doubting whether it's postfix causing the problems.

thanks in advance

$ mail -s "this is my subject" user
blah blah blah
.

Doesn't that work?
