Postfix: Host found but no data record of requested type

On my Fedora server I lately installed postfix for emailing. The domain name is '' and the hostname is pc1. No DNS running there.
Also I have a W2k3 server running called ''. This is the server in my network running DNS. I have an entry in the /etc/resolv.conf file that points to this DNS server.

Sending emails works fine for remote addresses like but for local local users like I get this output from /var/log/maillog:

Jun 30 16:02:59 pc1 postfix/smtp[13342]: D2F7EB7953:
to=<>, relay=none, delay=0, status=bounced (Host or
domain name not found. Name service error for
type=A: Host found but no data record of requested type)

Any ideas what parts of the system are misconfigured?

I don't know anything about Postfix, but I know with Sendmail you can tell it to masquerade for a domain. Perhaps you need to tell Postfix to do so for Otherwise it looks as though it is trying to find the mail server for that domain. Perhaps adding an A record to your DNS (or the equivalent to your /etc/hosts file) for pointing to your computer would work instead?

Does sending mail to work?

Unfortunately sending mails to doesn't work. That's where I got the error messages from actually

But I found the error. The potfix configuration file /etc/postfix/ has an attribute called $mydestination that describes which domain names should be treated as local domains. The values were:

mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost

It would have worked with email addresses like 'alex@pc1', '' or 'alex@localhost'. So I had to change to line to:

mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost, $mydomain

That solved to problem and directly led to the next one. Now I'm getting this output:

Jul 1 15:49:44 pc1 postfix/pickup[20977]: CA190B7A87: uid=89 from=<root> orig_id=C2F4ACEE9C
Jul 1 15:49:44 pc1 postfix/cleanup[21010]: CA190B7A87: Message-id=<>
Jul 1 15:49:44 pc1 postfix/qmgr[20978]: CA190B7A87: from=<>, size=294, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
Jul 1 15:49:44 pc1 postfix/local[21011]: warning: lookup test2, NIS domain, map mail.aliases: internal yp server or client error
Jul 1 15:49:44 pc1 postfix/local[21011]: CA190B7A87: to=<>, orig_to=<test2>, relay=local, delay=0, status=deferred (alias database unavailable)

Any ideas? I've no NIS installed and also don't want to install one

problem solved: again a misconfiguration. change the attribute alias_maps to:

alias_maps = $alias_database

That's it. For more information rely on this document:
