port 6001

Why does X need to open port 6001? Can it be used on the network?

Yes, client software on other hosts can write to your X server on that port. There may be controls in effect limiting who can access the X server.

Note that this is normal. It is what allows you run graphical applications on other hosts, and see/control them with your X server.

man xhost
man xauth

--- rod.

X windows often has 6000 port open. But you can disable it if you want.
