poptop vpn compression problem

I have poptop running on my system. I compiled mppe encryption and mppc compression into my kernel. I connect to the vpn and the encryption works. I get mppe-128 encryption. However there is no compression on the connection. I don't see an option in the poptop daemon for this. Is there something that needs set in the vpn server to make compression work? The client I connect with has compression chosen as an option, but there is none when I connect so I figure the deamon just doesn't have it working right.
