Poor network transfer speeds

Hello,

I have two machines which are experiencing poor network communication.

1 Machine is a Quad opteron Altus 4200 machine running kernel 2.4.21-20.ELsmp #1 SMP AS.

Its network card is:NetXtreme BCM5704 Gigabit Ethernet

The machine it is transferring to is:

Dual 2.8 xeon processors, running kernel 2.6.9-5.ELsmp #1 SMP. Its network card is: NetXtreme BCM5703X Gigabit Ethernet

They are both connected to a Cisco 3500 switch.

The problem is, scp/ftp/nc speeds start out very well 8 mb/s, and then decay over time. I'm transferring a 30 gig file that needs to be scp'd quickly.

Does anyone know of poor scp speeds with the 2.6.9 kernel? I'm asking this because a month ago, i was running 2.4.21-20 on the machine currently running 2.6.9, and the scp speeds were fine.

Any and all help are much appreciated!
