My Setup is as follows:

Dualboot Acer laptop with windows xp and red hat linux and with broadband connection.Able to connect to internet in win xp..Not from linux...getting the error:network unreachable .I tried the ifconfig -a command and brught up the ethernet interface and assigned the ip,subnet mask and te gateway to it.Did this with the gui tool and also the netconfig command and restarted the network daemons..But,still the same error.Able to ping the name server or the gateway...but,not able to ping the external sites or internet..its a standalone system at home...also checked the network and hosts related files ..I seem to be goofing up somewhere....

thanks for the reply Zamri
