please help - ifconfig/ethernet question

Hi, I have an ASUS motherboard with built in ethernet (broadcom 10/100) and have just installed slackware 9. I have the broadcom driver sorted out but if I do ifconfig, only the loopback info is shown. If i do ifconfig -a, eth0 info is shown too and mentions the broadcom NIC.

Does this mean eth0 is there and ready to go but needs to be activated? Can I do that with ifconfig eth0 up?

Any help is VERY appreciated!

you may need to configure the ethernet settings, IP address etc.

Slackware uses "netconfig", which is a semi-gui for you do do this.

At the end it will ask to probe for network cards, if you have the driver sorted alredy, DECLINE THE OFFER

Thanks for the quick replies - I'll try your suggestions this evening - already done netconfig so I think the ethernet is all set up, just doesn't seem to be activated. Hopefully ifup eth0 will sort that
