Question Please help: can't get Network up!!!


I trying to Network 2 machines using RedHat9 & Windows2000. I've read all the Samba docs I can and have set User shares and the proper auth mode using Samba but nothing works. I can see the Linux machine from Windows but get "the Network path was not found error". I'm sure it's something simple as someone here must be Networking.

Below is my /etc/samba/smb.conf file

Try adding:
security=user

Then restart samba, try again and if you still have problems then post the output of:
iptables -L

Thumbs down smb still doesn't work

I added the security=user to a section of my smb.conf and did the smb service restart but still no luck. It just displays the Linux box but won't let me connect.

I then type iptables -L > snot.txt and here is the result:

Try deleting:
hosts allow = Caracalla

And add a netbios name:
netbios name = linuxbox

Talking It worked

Ureeka! It worked. Actually the netbios name=linuxbox didn't do nothin. I had the line server string = samba server serverus when actually the computer name was Severus (with an upper case S). Once I changed the line to "server string = samba server Severus" it suddenly worked.

I thought that was just a comment line & that what the RedHat docs say, but apparently not???

It is just a comment line and that is likey to have made no difference at all.

Glad you got it working though

Well I'm sure there must be Gremlins behind the desk achewin on me Network cables.
