Ping websites but they wont load
Hey guys,
ive just installed arch linux, im usually a slack user but wanted to try something else. Its all working fine, apart from my internet connection. I can ping websites from the terminal, and have used pacman to update my system. But when i load firefox and try to say access google, it doesnt seem to work. Although it works if i use the ip ive got from pinging it. So im guessing its something to do with DNS? I dont understand how i can ping google.com and get an ip (this means dns is working right?), but when i try to load it in firefox it doesnt work, unless i use the ip. Any suggestions? I also had this problem when i was trying out kubuntu. Thanks, Kane |
Just because you can ping an ip address doesn't mean that dns is working. DNS = Domain Name Server: it's what gives a name to an ip. This is something usually done via your isp. Firefox just looks up the dns server to obtain an ip for the domain. If kubuntu doesn't work either then I believe it must something wrong with your connection to your isp and not an internal config error; especially if you can access the websites using an ip address.
Does slackware work OK? Are you able to determine if windows works? To be sure, post the contents your /etc/rc.conf and /etc/hosts files here. :) |
I can ping the web address (google.com) as well and get a response, i wasnt just pinging the ip address.
I dont believe it is to do with my connection as i can use the net in both slackware and windows. My /etc/hosts file contains: Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost kane Code:
HOSTNAME="kane" |
Re: Ping website
Make sure Firefox is configured correctly:
Edit -> Preferences -> General -> Connection Settings = Direct Connection to Internet. Check your /etc/resolv.conf also. You can also use tcpdump to see what your browser is doing. |
my resolv.conf is set as :
Code:
nameserver <192.168.1.1> but then when i tried to ping google.com i got unknown host. |
ive tried using links text browser, and that also works fine.
the loading/status bar on firefox seems to load to half way and then just stop. also only google seems to work with the ip in firefox, all other sites seem to fail. im stuck lol. thanks for ur help though |
Try re-installing it. Also try selecting "Automatically detect proxy settings".
|
Try this from a cmd window,
Code:
%telnet google.com 80 |
i can connect using telnet.
so would u know how i can reconfigure firefox? thanks Kane |
well i removed firefox and installed opera, and have the same problem with that.
but i can browse all i want in links text browser. hmmmmm |
still no luck,
i ran tcpdump and heres the output. Code:
18:53:46.652970 arp who-has mygateway.ar7 tell fxfeeds.mozilla.com Kane |
