Have you tried giving Xp a static IP, and setting the Windows 2003 IP as "gateway"?

yes

hi! Linux_Regular,

yes, i did. I did set a static IP at XP. But my gateway should be my linux proxy server. Windows 2003 server is only my domain controller or my user login server for my window application, as such my gateway is set to my proxy server.

can you browse from your xp box? have you configured a dns server in your linux box? if not you should use the dns server(s) in you xp box, that your proxy server uses (those that were provided to you by your isp).

In general a proxy server (eg squid) proxies specific tcp or udp traffic. It is not intended to forward icmp traffic. A proxy server is an application gateway.

A gateway is a network gateway (ip_forward=1) which means that everything that is Ip or icmp based will be forwarded.

So a proxy server is different from a network gateway.
