Permanent IP address

I remember those old days when I was I windows user and use to have a static IP with my DSL provider even that they don't provide static IP address. I manage to have one IP address every time I connect by modifying some windows XP configurations, I wasn't able to used it only if someone with the same provider has already taken it, is there a way to do that in gentoo linux, to have a single IP address every time I connect to my DSL provider??
I think this is hard to understand but I don't know how to explain this any better, if you want more info in what I want to do just ask me.
Thanks for your time

Unfortunatley you have to be given a static IP only from your ISP. Most ISP's like DSL and Cable Modem providers, the majority of the time they will issue the same IP address to every user or computer connected to their service.

Most likely you didn't do anything to keep the same IP, it was just that you kept recieving the same IP each time it released and renewed it.

I've been on a Cable Modem connection and have kept the same IP for over a year and 3 months now....

no my connection is like dial-up but with more speed I have to log on every time I want to connect. I know I did something because I before that I had different IP addresses every time I connected to have a single IP address I followed a tutorial in and it worked in my windows machine to have a single IP every time I log on to have game servers. If it was possible in windows with some tweaking it should be possible in linux
