Smile peer to peer networking setup

Hi all,

I have a Debian m/c and my son has a Windows xp m/c both have onboard NICs. I have done peer to peer in Windows before, but can't get it to work this time. We have a 3com four port hub and connected it all up but the debian m/c doesn't see the windows share and vice versa.

I read the Linux bible about samba and installed that, but I feel it's falling down over the IP addresses. Is there a standard way of assigning an IP address on Debian? How do I set an IP adress up for the machine and test the link please?

Many thanks,
Greeb

If you're using the Gnome desktop click on Desktop-->Administration-->Networking. you'll be asked for your root password, once in highlight your ethernet net card then on the right side of the box click properties. Assign your IP address here.

Use some command line tools to see if the share is browseable and accessible..
smbstatus will show your own samba status.

nmblookup -M -- -
will give a list of pcs which think they are Master browsers
nmblookup -A xx.xx.xx.xx
will return the names and services on a pc with ip number xx.xx.xx.xx
smbclient -L -I xx.xx.xx.xx
will show shares on pc xx.xx.xx.xx
