Question pcnet_cs module

I just upgraded my kernel to 2.4.9, I made all the modules that I need for my PCMCIA card and they will insert fine when the system boots, but I do not have an eth0 when I issue "ifconfig". All the needed modules are loaded and when the system boots it starts PCMCIA service (it beeps once like normal, then a lower sounding beep). If I try to issue "ifup eth0" it says something like "ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0". It seems like I'm missing something like an "alias eth0 pcnet_cs" in modules.conf but that doesn't work, what else would I need to do? I am using Progeny Debian btw, thanks for any help.
