Lost packets don't "go" anywhere. they don't get sent down the wrong cable, they disappear due to network congestion, corruption or defective / badly configured hardware. Tools like mtr and lft are useful to simulate network traffic but provide a traceroute like view of the route being taken, so will often highlight where packets are lost along the way, if they are.
