Usually it's real easy to get dhcp set up. But with the info you give out nobody can help you.
Do you connect with router or modem?
That connects to eth or is it internal?
If it is a router - is it supplied by your ISP?

Never Mind. I got it up fine.. It turns out that another machine on my network grabbed the ip address befor i could grab it. Everything looks good! Thanks Anyway.. btw. I am connecting via a cable modem(motorola). which (using a crossover) goes directly into eth0 of my linux box.

can you get into the modem's config to see if it is pulling an ip address?...and ensure the dhcp function in the modem or router is enabled?

I dont know how to get into my modem
I have tried the following
dhcpcd -k result dhcpcd: not running
ifup eth0 result operation failed
I also tried manually setting the ip config 192.168.0.1 net mask 255.255.255.0 and broadcast 192.168.9.255 and was able to ping 192.168.0.1
should i be going this route with a cable modem that gets dynamic IPs?
IM lost

You need to ensure your modem is pulling an ip address first. also, the modem should be handing your system a different IP. You have to ensure your modem is provisioned correctly from your ISP. You dont need the dhcp service for this...you cant assign yourself a dhcp address.
