Hi folks,
Some of you may have been following me setting up some form of an openvpn gateway to the public. This is what I have on the server:
It is a VPS server with 10Mbps up and down (yey!)
Current, this server has TWO openvpn ethernet bridge connections. It is acting as an
openvpn bridge client (tap0) which connects to my server at home to help me administer it and it also acts as an
openvpn bridge server (tap1) so the public can access it (using a combination of wifidog/squid/squidguard).
My problem, is that the speed on the "public" vpn connection seems to be capped at around 1.6Mbps. Why do you reckon this is? From tap0 (which connects to my house) I get a solid 6Mbps (considering my DSL connection is only 8Mbps...)
Since this is a VPS server (I don't have access to it physically) and due to the nature of openvpn ethernet bridging, i had to create a dummy network interface (dummy0) and bridge this with tap1.
Maybe openvpn doesn't play well with dummy devices?
It has nothing to do with squid or wifi dog as I removed them for testing and this problem remains
Your help is very much appreciated.
Thanks
Update: It get weirder! The throughout of tap1 doesn't seem to be limited to 1.6Mbps overall, but neraly per connection. Example, a single user can download 2 files at 1.6Mbps each. FYI, I use 1.6 as a very rough figure. It vaires between 512k and 1.6Mbps. I know it sounds like I'm downloading from slow sites but normalls I would get full speed from these mirrors. Like as I type this, I am downloading files at 110KB/s,110KB/s,108KB/s,51KB/s,55KB/s (according to firefox).
