Only Konqueror and Kontact connect

I can connect to Internet using Konqueror and I can manage mails with Kontact, but all other software fail (Firefox, Thunderbird, Evolution, Epiphany). I get a "connection timed out" message.
I tested several Linux distributions (Mandriva 2006 and 2007, Knoppix, Ubuntu, Suze) on different hard disks, on two different computers, using two different modems: the modem is connected to my Internet provider, the computer is connected to the modem, but only Konqueror and Kontact work.
(I also temporarily stopped my firewall with no success)

ping free.fr is OK
host free.fr gives ";;connection timed out: no server could be reached". Nevertheless, I can connect to free.fr with Konqueror.

I can't understand...
