only have ftp access

My pc running Win XP Pro is behind a firewall that gives you access to http if you have a password which I do not have. I just found that if I run Virtual Box on top of Win XP with a guest session of MCN Linux Delft that I can update my software using ftp repositories (I checked the repository locations and saw it upgrade my entire distribution from ftp locations).

What does this mean? It seems I can only access ftp. Is it possible to get http through ftp using http tunneling here:

It seems ftp is allowed in your configuration; httptunnel will probably not work as it needs a working http connection and creates other connections like ftp, telnet ... inside a working http connection. Maybe you can configure httptunnel so it uses ftp connections and creates http connections instead, or some other program.

I run a server out of my house which I've also put httptunnel on and it has full http access. It seems httptunnel runs in server and client mode. So I ran httptunnel as a server from a root session at home. Then at work I ran httptunnel as a client and set up the proxy in firefox to match that of httptunnel. That didn't work, though.
