Online, Ethernet active, but Mozilla won't take me anywhere?
All:
Help a newb. I'm running FC2, Network panel says Ethernet connection active, when I bring up Mozilla in the lower-left-hand box it states I am online, but I can't get anywhere -- not to goggle, amazon, any obvious place. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks, James

First of all, try ping something outside by IP, for instance 198.133.219.25 (cisco.com), if you succeed, try ping by name, ping cisco.com
if that fails, your problem is DNS setup - edit /etc/resolv.conf to include nameservers statements
nameserver x.x.x.x
nameserver y.y.y.y
where x.x.x.x and y.y.y.y are IP's of the nameservers provided by your ISP.

Ethernet Internet connection
Hi,
Did the problem with the Ethernet internet connection get resolved?
I have a Windows XP and a Linux Redhat 8 box connected to a private LAN. The Windows box is connected to Broadband and I would like to use the same connection for Mozilla.
So far I can Ping and Ftp quite happily in both directions but Mozilla can't pick up external web sites, although it can see my Windows localhost web page.
Most forums mention Firewalls but this makes no difference. I am not using a proxy.
There has been talk about leads which has really thrown me. I am using Belkin Cat5 cables running at 100mbps. I have been assured it should work.
Best Wishes,
Lee Barker,
London, England.

for both of u ...have u set up the network connections (gateway, dns server) correctly in linux.
the ethernet connection may well be active but it doesn`t necessarily mean that u have an internet connection.
Being able to ping both machines is a good start (ur network link is obviously working) Settings in the linux machine are now what u should be looking at to get your win machine working as a server.

Internet connection via Windows XP
I've managed to make a bit of progress with this via some information I stumbled across on Google.
I located the file /etc/sysconfig/network
I then added the line:
GATEWAYDEV="eth0" and rebooted.
Now I can Ping and Ftp external sites (assuming I had permissions).
Sadly I still can't reach anything externally in my Mozilla browser, but I'm now more determined not to give in.
Thanks for all your input so far.
Regards,
Lee Barker.

Have u ran the ICS wizard on your xp machine? as this has to act as your gateway and dns server. This will have to be done first.
In your network configuration in linux u will need to add the network addy of your xp machine which will now be 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 your linux machine for ease can be given an addy of 192.168.0.2
In the file /etc/resolv.conf this needs then to read
nameserver 192.168.0.1
Try these things and have a look through the networking forum u will find this topic has been discussed many times. :-)

Problem solved
Many thanks mermxx!
All is working well now. I had gone down the ICS path previously but had kept my original Linux IP set to 169.254... etc.
This meant that I lost the previously working Ping/Ftp functionality which was kind of a step back.
Not sure why 192.168.0.2 is favoured over 169.254... but I'll just accept it as said.
I've never seen my Mozilla browser work so fast :-)
Best Wishes and Thanks again.
