Online?

I downloaded and installed xubuntu 13.10 all seemed to be working fine, until I tried to go online. Although it says it is connected the browser doesn't load anything it just sits and the icon just sits and spins. If you go to network connections it also says it is connected.any advice would be appreciated.

Open a terminal, and try to ping the following two addresses:

ping google.com
ping 74.125.225.199

Whether both work, neither work, or one of each will help identify the cause of the problem.

The ping seems to work, and I accessed my router and checked the network status there and it also shows that it is connected along with this desktop and my laptop. Not sure what is going on.

Yes others can and the one with xbunutu says it is connected but I'm unable to open the browser or download updates. I did manage to get a copy of chrome for it that I'm installing now so we will see what a different browser will do. I'll let you know what happens.

What exactly do you see when you ping google.com and 74.125.225.199? Also, what do you see when you run the following?
Code:
sudo ifconfig -a

That's decidedly odd as it seems you do have an internet connection and working DNS. How about if you run "sudo apt-get update"?

It is odd...I've only encountered behavior like that once before, but it was on Windows. The machine could ping anything under the sun...web sites, IPs, local boxes, but couldn't go anywhere in the browser, even sites on the local network wouldn't load. However, I could access Windows shares on the local network. After beating my head against the desk for a few minutes, I rebooted it, and it started working fine.

If it doesn't finish then, no, that's not right at all. What do you see when you run "sudo ifconfig -a"? I know it's a long output but you're looking for something like the following with only one adaptor having a "real" IP address (i.e. not 127.0.0.1):
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:15:ed:d3:44
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1
          RX packets:48 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:48 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:3504 (3.4 KiB) TX bytes:3504 (3.4 KiB)

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr ae:2b:43:13:56:c7
          inet addr:192.168.2.101 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe87::272:47df:fe13:3bab/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:188978 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:116871 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:133824974 (127.6 MiB) TX bytes:12204708 (11.6 MiB)
As suicidaleggroll says as reboot may fix it.

When I did ifconfig -a this is what I got

Size:	260.2 KB

It took 10 hours for the update to complete and then half of them didn't download or didn't install
