one box - two nics - routing problem


I'm stuck on this one.
eth0 10.1.0.1
eth1 10.2.0.1
gateway 10.1.0.248
(I added eth1 not so the box will act as a router but only so I can monitor traffic on the 10.2.0.0 network for problems, etc.)
I can ping any host on my network EXCEPT hosts on the 10.2.0.0 network.
ifconfig shows both nics up
[root@mandy1 cron.d]# netstat -nr
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
10.2.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1
10.1.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth0

I can see traffic on eth1 if i run tcpdump -i eth1.
Again, I cannot ping any host on 10.2.0.0 network.
What am I missing here?

[root@mandy1 network-scripts]# ping 10.2.0.2
PING 10.2.0.2 (10.2.0.2) 56(84) bytes of data.
From 10.2.0.1 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable

hi,

this could be your firewall script or your default routing - but you can try #echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward -for a start.

and see whats happen.

tried that earlier - no help
also tried manually adding route for 10.2.0.0 network specifying 10.2.0.248(router) as gw and eth1 as dev.

these were really desperation attempts. routing really should not be involved here. the host i'm trying to ping is on the same wire as eth1.

hi,

thats a little bit odd - so whats happen if you disable your eth0 interface - can you ping that 2.0 subnet? how about the firewall?

disabling eth0 did not help.
I also deleted default route and added static routes to all my networks to no avail.
