Once again, no wireless UI in panel for nm-applet

I've combed the forums and searched endlessly in google. I have the notification area enabled, but all I get is the icon with two displays (somewhat simlar to the Windows systray icon for network interfaces). I do not have the "bars" that nm-applet used to display. When I right-click on the former icon, "wireless-networks" is greyed out. Yet my wireless will connect using iwconfig. What am I doing wrong

I've noticed that if you have manually entered information about a network interface in it's configuration file, network-manager will ignore that interface. Networkmanager on my current machine says there are 'no network devices found'... obviously untrue since I am posting online. but I have manually configured a static IP for my network card directly in the /etc/network/interfaces file .

Might there be information in your interfaces file about your wireless interface ?
