Old Samba 3.0.x incompatible with active directory?

Hello everyone, I have a few linux boxes, old suse and old redhat that are running on samba 3.0.x (3.0.13 and 3.0.7 if not mistaken).
I ran into problems being able to use my credentials to mount a network share. If I try with ubuntu 10.4 I have no problems at all.

The problem I get into is that If I use gnome to connect to the shared resource and provide the server name, share name, folder name and user/password it will accept everything except the password. (It keeps prompting me for a password.)

When doing the same from ubuntu 10.04 I have no problems. Currently I'm going to try with opensuse 11.3.

If it was me I would just setup a linux box and use NFS, because I am not allowed to upgrade/replace the linux distro or version installed on these systems.

Is the older Samba the issue? ubuntu 10.04 is running 3.4.x or is it something else like ldap, nis, kerberos, etc?

If samba is the issue can it be safely upgraded without breaking anything else?

The linux boxes have a third party flash media testing suite made of a hardware/software combo.

thanks for any help in advance.

I'm not sure where else to post something like this, so please move it to the correct sub forum admins. Thanks!

Likely is an issue depending on the Domain controller. If you are using a DC that is 2008, and possibly 2003 you can get issues like this is has something to do with encryption of the password.

Thanks so much for your reply, it does make sense. I tried opensuse 11.3 and I had no problems connecting to the shared resource. So I guess the older samba 3.0.X can't handle the current level or method of encrypting the passwords.

If I recall there was a reghack on windows you could do, but it's not recommended.
