Old ethernet card doesnt work

I just installed slackware on a really old pc, (486 66mhz 32Mb Ram) I already configured the network card (a 3Com using the 3C509 module) everything is perfect until I do the netconfig stuff.
I have a 2Wire HomePortal 1800HW router for my internet connection. The problem is that I cant get the linuxbox to get an IP. Using automatic DHCP server doesnt seem to work (it doesnt get any ip at all), and when using a static IP I cant even see the computer throw the router configuration interface neither ping to it or ping from it to any other computer in the network.
I dont know whats going on. I hope somebody can help me.

Are you really sure you set up your network card correctly?

Try ping localhost, and see what happens.

If worst comes to worse, just assign yourself ip 192.168.0.1, for a generic lan, and see if you can ping yourself then. Try posting again with more info, or error messages, if you still can't get anything to work.

Thanks, I can ping localhost and also the IP address the computer has when assigned as static IP.
thats why I think its correctly installed.
I think there is something wrong with the dhcp service in the linux box or with the router, cus it cant get
an IP dinamically neither I can ping the gateway (router IP)

Good luck!
Best bet is if you can get your hands on another computer, to check the router, and compare dhcp settings between your machine and another that works.

For my DLink router I had to run the config software under windows at first to get everything working properly, and once dhcp to my machine running Windows worked, then I knew it was only Linux config issues. Eventually playing with the settings got it to work.
