obtain accurate "REMOTE_ADDR" perl

i have the following on a webserver

#------------------------
$ip_address = $ENV{REMOTE_ADDR};

print "Content-type: text/html\n\n";
print $ip_address;
#-------------------------

however it provides bogus results (eg 10.2.124.535) which cannot be ping'd, REMOTE_HOST provides nothing at all

however this site http://checkip.dyndns.org/ gives me my correct ip

how can i make my page return my correct ip?
