O2 Reverse DNS

Dear All,

I have a static IP address from O2. O2 don't offer a service to assign a reverse DNS entry to my server. The reverse address actually points to one of O2's competitors.

So I'm wondering if I run my own DNS server and point the reverse DNS entry at my server will all be well? Will there be some sort of conflict with the the existing reverse IP address?

Thanks,
Scott

Unfortunately that is not an uncommon practice.

AFAIK unless your provider delegates authority to your NS won't even be queried: it isn't listed as authoritative.

Thanks for the help.

The reverse IP actually points at another provider - I take it this means that O2 have delegated authority to the other provider. This seems strange.

As you haven't posted any details it's impossible to say anything about it. There are a few web sites like "DNS Sleuth" that provide you with a clear analysis of NS problems. Such an independent report could make it easier for your providers tech personnel (should they actually be qualified, care and be interested in more than just taking your money) to do something about it.
