ntop general questions

Hello All:
After running for a few months with my RH7.1 router/firewall I decided to play with ntop to see what my stats are looking like. Now unfortunately I have 2 questions:

1) looks like I have su to root and run ntop when needed. In a perect world I would like this to collect data all the time so I can see performance over long periods of time using the -d option. This is probably more of a general question, but any reasons why I should not (large Log files, memory usage etc)?

2) I am using 3Com 3c509 cards and not recieving any stats in the web interface (after runing for an hour). are there any special tricks when using 3c509 cards?
